- The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is a fast, hoofed mammal native to North America and the continent’s quickest land animal. Though it resembles an antelope, it is the only surviving member of the Antilocapridae family. Recognizable by its tan-and-white coat, large eyes, and distinctive horns that are shed and regrow annually, it thrives in open plains, grasslands, and deserts across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Built for speed and endurance, the pronghorn can reach up to 88 km/h (55 mph) to evade predators
